Dutch ovens

Makeshift Dutch Ovens

This quick tutorial on the various options for creating a Dutch oven is to ensure you that nothing fancy or expensive is required.

It’s all about creating a super hot environment to give that signature crust & chewy interior. I’ve worked with simple & inexpensive roasting pans for the baguettes, cast iron for the boule or a metal cake pan and even 2 preheated loaf pans stacked on top of each other.

Notes:

Ensure to heat for at least 45 minutes to 1 hour before placing your bread inside the Uber hot space.

(Don’t forget the oven mitts. Every. Single. Time!)

I also discovered that using 2 loaf pans of the same size works a treat. Probably the most inexpensive way to create a dutch oven for a loaf of sourdough.

More Notes:

I like to throw in 3-4 ice cubes right as my Dutch oven goes in. This creates that desired steamy environment as inverted pans, loaf tins are of course makeshift & gaps will inevitably appear.

Final notes:

Always spray the bread and a little around the bread by spraying onto the tray, the side of cast iron pot etc. I do not recommend using ice cubes near the breads however.
